English Literature and English Language

Introduction

Meet Victor, a scientifically and mathematically minded student with a knack for numbers and computing. With just 30 days before his Eduqas GCSE exams, his mother sought my help. Despite his strengths in STEM subjects, Victor, needed that final push to elevate his English grades from a 6 to an 8. His mother wished she had explored English tuition earlier, believing that a stronger grounding in the subject could have balanced his academic profile making him a more rounded proposition for universities and employers. Here’s how we achieved remarkable results in a short time.

Background

Victor, was performing well at school, excelling in maths, computing, and science. However, his English grades were not quite at the same level. He had great ideas but struggled with structuring his thoughts and expanding his analysis, often repeating himself or not engaging deeply enough with the text. Concerned that he needed help, he asked his mother to seek a tutor to refine his skills and boost his confidence in English.

Teaching Approach

Step 1

Quick Assessment

With only a month to prepare, we swiftly assessed Victor’s strengths and weaknesses. This allowed us to identify key areas for improvement and devise a tailored plan to build on his existing skills.

Step 2

Understanding the Mark Scheme and Assessment Objectives

We focused on ensuring Victor understood exactly what examiners were looking for. Breaking down the mark scheme and assessment objectives gave him a clear roadmap for what to include in his answers to score top marks.

Students hovering around grade 6 to 7 often just need clarification on what to do and when to do it.

Understanding exactly what is required of them and grasping the higher-level concepts that will distinguish their answers from hundreds of other students can make all the difference.

Step 3

Creative and Transactional Writing

To enhance his writing, I provided solid strategies for generating ideas and planning them into unique, engaging structures. Our goal was to excite the examiners with original and well-organised content containing the right techniques in the correct places.

Step 4

Literature Analysis

For literature, we explored big ideas that represent higher-order thinking. This approach helped Victor elevate his analysis to a more mature and insightful level. We focused on the texts from his syllabus, ensuring his responses were well-structured and rich in detailed analysis. We identified the social and philosophical messages, and underlying themes in “The Woman in Black,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Romeo and Juliet,” so that he could move beyond standard language and structural analysis to comment on the writer’s intentions and the ‘Gold’ ideas that wow examiners.

Progress and Development

Milestones

Despite the tight timeline, Victor’s progress was impressive. Here are some key milestones:

Week 1

Assessed current performance and identified key areas for improvement. Began intensive sessions on shorter 10 mark questions which would teach him the building blocks of analytical writing that we could implement in our study of the literature texts. He was also provided with revision material containing language techniques, targets and conventions for both creative writing and transactional writing. He would study these in the background whilst we worked on Literature so that he would be ready when we came to practising writing in a few weeks.

Week 2

Delved into literature analysis, exploring higher-order ideas and enhancing the depth of his responses. We used my colour coding system to easily understand how a Grade 9 analytical paragraph is constructed and the key ways in which a response can be ‘expanded.’ We practised past paper questions and immediately implemented feedback into new drafts and compared original with improved answers to clearly see exactly how to improve.

Subsequent Weeks

In amongst the actual exams we balanced creative and transactional writing, introducing planning strategies and unique structures. We also adopted an ad hoc approach that allowed Victor to practise items in which he wanted to gain confidence, all the time providing clear feedback as actionable tasks to fine-tune his performance.

Breakthroughs

A pivotal moment came when Victor applied our strategies to dramatically cut the amount of time needed for tasks. He was able to write more succinctly which allowed him to make more points and present more analysis to ensure higher engagement with the text.

Feedback from Victor

Victor felt much more confident in the subject and really appreciated my no-nonsense and dynamic teaching style. He particularly valued that I spoke to him like an adult and not a child.

Results

Achievements

Victor’s hard work paid off. He moved from a Grade 6 to a Grade 8 in both English Literature and English Language, achieving his goal in just 30 days. His strong work ethic and obvious ability helped to make this incredible achievement possible.

Personal Growth

Beyond the grades, Victor gained confidence in his analytical skills and writing abilities.

His mother reflected that if such huge improvements were possible in a short time, imagine what he could have accomplished with a stronger grounding in English from an earlier stage.

She believes this would have helped balance his STEM skills, creating a more rounded skills base.

Conclusion

Victor’s journey from a solid performer to a top achiever in such a short time is a testament to the power of focused, personalised tutoring. As his trusted tutor, it was immensely rewarding to see him transform and achieve his full potential.

Crash courses like this are not to be attempted lightly. I accepted the challenge only after meeting Victor and witnessing his strong desire, focus and aptitude to cope with the volume of work that needed to be done.

It would have been impossible if he did not have a substantial set of notes and knowledge about basic elements of the text as well as strong ability to retain information.

Summary

The 9-1 GCSE system makes new demands of students, requiring them to memorise many quotes and strands of information for exam essays.

It’s why many schools now prepare their pupils from the beginning of Year 9. Help take the pressure off your child and begin them early, make use of the summers so that they can be fully prepared by the beginning of December of Year 11 for their mocks.
