Introduction
Meet Celia, a student who had always been passionate about reading but had recently fallen out of love with English due to the persistent absence of her schoolteacher. With just six weeks before her end-of-year KS3 assessment, her mother Roberta, a lecturer who understands the pedagogical science and approach needed, needed a KS3 Tutor. She was drawn to my background and contacted me for help. The goal was to give Celia the confidence she needed and hopefully reignite her love for KS3 English. Here’s how we achieved remarkable results in a short time.
Background
Celia had always excelled in English, driven by her voracious appetite for reading. However, the disruption caused by her teacher’s absence left her feeling lost and disengaged. Despite her strong comprehension skills, Celia had no experience writing analytical paragraphs about how writers achieve effects on readers, a crucial part of her upcoming KS3 assessment.
KS3 Tutor Approach
Step 1
Quick Assessment
With only six weeks to prepare, we swiftly assessed Celia’s strengths and weaknesses. Her love of reading made her brilliant at comprehension, but she needed to develop her analytical writing skills.
Step 2
Analytical Writing
I provided Celia with frameworks and gradually scaffolded her learning so she could write a succession of precise analytical paragraphs that developed her ideas. These paragraphs identified the techniques used by the writers, explored the connotations of keywords, and efficiently supported her points without unnecessary waffle.
Step 3
Descriptive and Narrative Writing
We also focused on descriptive and narrative writing, ensuring Celia was aware of the targets and conventions examiners look for. We worked on generating ideas and organising them into a dramatic structure that began with mystery and defamiliarisation, built tension, and culminated in a cliffhanger ending.
Step 4
Overcoming Writer’s Block
Celia had previously struggled with writer’s block, often staring at a blank page with no idea where to begin. I taught her that generating and organising ideas in advance could prevent this issue, helping her to approach writing tasks with confidence.
Step 5
Techniques and Feedback
We also taught Celia a range of descriptive and persuasive writing techniques that would improve her writing and enhance her ability to analyse how writers use these techniques. Regular feedback helped refine her skills and boosted her confidence.
KS3 Progress and Development
Milestones
Celia’s progress over the six weeks was impressive. Here are some key milestones:
Breakdown
Week 1
Assessed her current performance and identified key areas for improvement. We learned persuasive writing techniques and learned how to spot them in different forms of transactional writing (such as articles, leaflets, letters etc.)
Week 2
Using a clear formula, we learned how to construct efficient and effective analytical paragraphs, using them to explore how writers create impact and effect.
Week 3
After understanding how writers persuade their audiences, Celia experimented with using persuasive techniques as she learned how to write a persuasive letter (a form of transactional writing) adapting her style to the audience and purpose. She was also introduced to planning for the first time which allowed her to complete the overall task in record time.
Week 4
Worked on descriptive and narrative writing, focusing on descriptive techniques and structure to engage the reader. We also revisited the importance of planning as well as developing strategies for generating and organising ideas to overcome writer’s block.
Week 5
We practised planning out ideas to multiple past paper creative writing questions to help Celia adapt her newfound knowledge to different scenarios and to realise that creative writing should hold no fear as long as we take the time to generate ideas and plan.
Week 6
Intensive revision sessions, focusing on practice KS3 assessments and applying all the skills she had learned and revisiting any areas that she felt she needed extra confidence in.
Breakthroughs
A pivotal moment came when Celia was stunned at how easy it was to write up a well-developed plan. The key takeaway was that the bulk of the thinking occurs at the planning stage leaving her to focus on enjoying playing with language and techniques at the writing stage rather than stressing about what to write next. She began to approach writing tasks with a newfound confidence and clarity.

Celia felt much more confident in the subject and really appreciated my fun and easygoing style. She loved how I broke everything down into easy-to-follow steps.

Achievements
Celia’s hard work paid off. She was able to approach her end-of-year KS3 assessment with confidence writing high-quality analytical paragraphs and well-structured descriptive and narrative pieces.
Personal Growth
Beyond the assessment, Celia regained her love for English and developed strong analytical and writing skills. The focus now shifts in year 9 to developing and preparing Celia’s skills and knowledge for GCSEs, particularly around creative and transactional writing alongside analysing poetry from her anthology and prose. The skills she develops here will underpin the study of her key GCSE literary texts in Years 10 and 11.

Personally, I love seeing her smile as she grows in confidence and begins to achieve her full potential.
