Introduction
Only the best English GCSE tutor would do for a group of siblings: a sister and two younger brothers – Maths prodigies of their mother, a veteran Maths teacher. The eldest, who had struggled with persistent illness, urgently needed assistance to fulfil her potential whereas the brothers, with a history of homeschooling, were bright and excelled in many areas but struggled with creativity and were complete novices at analysis. Here’s how we grappled with poems and slayed analytical essays in our attempt to match their maths exploits.
Background
Though they could do algebraic fractions blindfolded, writing a story or analysing a poem would leave the trio pulling their hair out with frustration. At the end of stage one, the eldest has shown immense courage to battle against the odds and complete her GCSEs. The boys’ tutoring journey continues…

Step 1
Tailored Strategy
For the eldest, we did our best to cover content in and around unavoidable absences, constantly reviewing and revising the structured English GCSE roadmap to create a realistic challenge that kept her motivated and believing in her ability to succeed. It’s a similar story for the youngest who battles with illness too. The middle brother also faced planned absences because he needed large swathes of time to prepare for his Maths GCSE which he was taking one year early.
Each child had a unique plan, filled with individual English milestones. We split the GCSE syllabus into manageable chunks, focusing on key skills and deep dives into texts. With frequent testing and timely adjustments, we maintained their trajectory towards success. We transformed stress into structured, efficient study habits, ensuring that every analysis, every quote and every theme was at their fingertips when it mattered most.
Step 2
Tools and Resources
To help mitigate the interruptions, we turned to a treasure trove of my personal English GCSE research, revealing the hidden depths and rich themes within each text.
Cultivating a habit of highly efficient and organised note-taking has helped them minimise the disruption of illness, allowing them to quickly recap and pick up from where they left off.
Again, in a rejection of all things involving last-minute cramming, regular testing and embracing the concept of ‘active recall’ fortified their retention. Essay writing with our trusty (and unique) colour-coded feedback system has sharpened their GCSE English Literature and Language analytical prowess. Our goal was to make their arguments not just clear, but compelling, standing head and shoulders above their peers.

Eldest Sister
Despite her considerable health challenges, she embraced “Macbeth” and “Of Mice and Men,” gaining a firm grasp of critical analysis and essay structure. Her resilience paid off, achieving commendable Grade 7s in GCSE English Literature and Language amidst extreme health-related adversity.
Second Brother
Initially found literary analysis daunting, but gradually developed a knack for dissecting poems and unearthing social themes. His analytical essays are a force to be reckoned with, showing remarkable improvement and scooping Grade 8s regularly in Year 10.
Youngest Brother
Battling with persistent chronic headaches, he continues to overcome significant barriers. With tailored support, we’re bridging the gap in his learning, showing substantial progress in literary comprehension and analysis to attain Grade 7s in both English Language and English Literature in Year 9.

Achievements
The eldest sister’s grades speak volumes, while her brothers’ progress is equally impressive. Their analytical skills have sharpened, and yep, you’ve guessed it: both elder siblings have a newfound love of the subject. The youngest’s confidence is growing all the time and has discovered a love of social topics that literature study reveals.
